The above picture really highlighted just how flat the Bachmann class 08 spring detail is, so I started looking at them with a view to laser cutting an overlay when I next visited Tim’s as a little side project.
Looking at the real thing they are not only flat but bear only a passing resemblance to the real thing with only about half the number of springs represented, the vertical rods could also be improved by shaving them off and replacing with wire.
Above the final result, it needs the weathering to be blended back in but im pretty pleased with how it turned out.
Hello Jim,
That looks much better. I went several steps further on my P4 Bachmann 08, not only adding new leaf springs (individual springs made of very fine brass sheet layers) but the support side damping(?) rods as well, plus masses of extra chassis detail too. It was inspired by the articles in MRJ by Tim Shackleton. The Bachmann 08 is a fine model; highly reliable (well mine is) with very slow running aided by the sprung centre axle. As to the Hornby model… all I’ve experienced is trouble, especially from a noise point of view (squealing).
Cheers
Simon
Can I have four sets please Jim? With the spring overlays the wire If you add a set of Brians glazing http://shawplan.files.wordpress.com/2013/02/img_7307.jpg that’ll make a big difference as well.
If they’re going to be available I would like a couple of sets too please!
Hi all
I’ll ask Tim if he wants to make them available.
I read the MRJ article but with 2 to do it just seemed like far too much faff! The one on your site did look good though.
Cheers
Jim
Hi all
Laser cut springs are now available from Tim, see http://www.timhorn.co.uk/bachmann-class-08-spring-overlay/
I saw this on the DEMU forum the other day from Tim, yes they looked interesting. I could do with a set too. Which MRJ was the 08 article in, sound like something I need to look into… I guessing it covered the counter unit attached to the coupling rod. My Rods are now done, but I’m struggling with the front steps, although a solution to that might be in hand.
Thanks for the info Jim
Does anyone else hate Jim?
Yet another thing I was content to leave alone as it didn’t look too bad. Now look what he has gone and done.
Well done Jim.
Hello Jonathan,
I’ve been hunting around for the two MRJ’s that the article appeared in. They’re around somewhere and as soon as I find them I’ll let you know the dates and issue numbers, that’s if Jim doesn’t beat me to it of course.
Cheers
Simon
First 08 article was MRJ 8 but that was the modern outlines kit (useful drawing). There was one on upgrading the bachmann model by Tim Shackleton in issue 124.
The MRJ index is handy – http://www.modelrailwayjournal.com/index.php?o=title&s=Bachmann&t=titles%26descriptions&g=1&x=0&y=0
Thanks Simon
I lost where this was being discussed (doh!)… and searched the MRJ index site – yes “124”… I’ll see about back-issues.
Oh, and thanks for that other message earlier Jim; appreciated 🙂
Ah… issue 124 seems to be one of the harder to come by issues. Not found any on sale yet 🙁
